Question Ten – Last Words…
Throughout this series of Pre-Renovation Questions, we have discussed most of the practical aspects of your custom renovation, providing you with some information and choices to consider along the way. Now it’s time to ponder the emotional side. This is usually a huge undertaking – most often a family’s biggest expense after the purchase of your home.
Do your research
Talk to friends who have renovated as well as other real estate and renovation experts. It’s important before you embark on the renovation roller-coaster that you have a clear understanding of what to expect. Ask the builder that you are considering if they have testimonials that you can read or past projects that you can look at. Plus, you need to make sure that you bring your thoughts and research to the table. Clip photos out of magazines of rooms that you love. Scour shops and the Internet for the latest and greatest. Have a general idea of how you want the space to look and feel. If you are overwhelmed, find an interior designer who can help you lead the way.
Don’t have any regrets
If you plan carefully and choose wisely, chances are you won’t have any regrets. But remember, when you choose to renovate, do it with a certain amount of self-confidence. Don’t second guess choices once they’ve been made, paid for and installed.
It’s not all doom and gloom and with the right builder and terrific communication, it can be lots of fun. At the end of the day, there’s nothing more rewarding than watching a space be transformed by good design decisions and great workmanship. Better still is the day when the work is done and you can enjoy the results in the peace and quiet of your new space.
The more planning that you can do before you renovate, with all of the key participants including your custom home builder, the easier it is to achieve your vision with the least amount of stress.
