Question Four – Are there future considerations?
Lots of people who come to us to renovate their home are doing so because, for whatever reason, they don’t want to move. With this in mind, it’s quite possible that you will be in your home – your newly renovated home – for quite a few years. So, of course, you should take the time to think long-term – look ahead past what your needs are now to what your needs will be in 5 years, 10 years and even longer.
Strategize with your custom renovation builder and your designer so that you can meet both your current needs and your anticipated future needs. Will you have children? More children? Will the shared room that they love now cause tension as they become more independent?
Do you need more bedrooms? Will the bedrooms accommodate a bigger bed – they get big!! Is there room for a desk or sports equipment? Planning now will help your home grow with you and give you flexibility if things change.
Plan for multi-functional spaces that can evolve with your family. As the kids get older will they need a separate space, will you as parents need a space that you can retreat into? Can the children’s play room transform into a teenage retreat or study space? This not only provides future proofing but it means that as the dynamic in your home changes you can still live in harmony.
Now none of us can see exactly what will come, but our parents will age, we will age – way too fast! Before you begin your custom renovation it’s a good idea to think about the possible future of your home. Will your parents possibly need to stay, will they have accessibility needs, are you going to need another bathroom to accommodate them comfortably? Plan for it now while you’re carrying out your renovations.
Maybe you can’t afford to or don’t really want to add these additional spaces yet, but by planning for them now and creating a plan to suit, when the time comes you can renovate again without the need to undo what you have already done. A clever custom renovation now can provide space for the future.
