How to Ensure Your Brisbane Home Renovation is Eco Friendly

Act now to ensure your home is as good for the environment as it can be!

In the past you may have felt limited in what you could do to make your home energy efficient and sustainable. Now is the perfect opportunity for you to reduce your family's carbon footprint. Are you aware that over 40% of the waste entering Australian landfill sites is building waste? I know it's hard to believe there's that much waste.

In this article, I'm going to share with you how smart decisions about your home can benefit both you, your family and the environment.

Now is the time to act... before it's too late

Over 40% of the waste entering Australian landfill sites is building waste. We can all help to reduce waste by building more energy efficient homes, especially during the construction process of your newly renovated home. Not all builders will offer you this!

Eco friendly building is not just a buzz phrase; it is a benefit for you, your family, the future users of the home, your neighborhood, society. With current government debates going on at present around Clean Energy Targets, now is the right time to act, but how is it done exactly?

Constructive Homes is on Board with Your Desire for an Eco Friendly Home

What does eco friendly mean for you?

Energy efficiency and sustainability are two separate goals that work in tandem. Here at Constructive Homes, we use an external auditor to ensure the home has optimal thermal performance and reduced air changes per hour. These two factors influence how much heating or cooling is required (power consumption) to keep the home comfortable for the occupants.

For new houses, find a builder that will include ecological impact data in the plans for the home. For home renovations, do a home sustainability assessment, and get your builder on board.

Building Eco Friendly Homes in Brisbane

We don't have much need for heating in tropical Queensland, and home insulation is built to keep heat out in summer. Some members of your house may run heaters in winter, especially in the morning. To avoid this, orient your house on the block so that rooms that need more warmth in winter catch the morning sun (e.g. bedrooms). Living spaces should be in the middle of the house, or especially facing away from the afternoon sun. Use trees for natural shade over the patio, backyard and house. Ensure that rooms where people spend day time are small and enclosed so air conditioning only needs to run in those spaces, not the entire house.

Using a clothes line, solar panels, a rain water tank, and a greywater system are obvious ways to use the resources that are freely available in nature rather than gas or mains power. The energy drain of summer is substantial in Queensland. Before building your home, work with your builder to ensure they design everything at their disposal to provide natural cooling in summer.
